State senate District 12 candidate Dennis Baxley condemned the behavior of an Oxford man who told Wildwood police this past week he’s “glad that officers in Dallas were killed.”
Baxley reacted to the arrest as he was discussing proposed Blue Lives Matter legislation.
“I’m very disheartened,” said Baxley in response to the Oxford man’s statement to Wildwood police. “This is not how we conduct ourselves in a civil society.”

He expressed his disappointment in the promotion of hatred toward law enforcement “seeping into our culture,” suggesting that the influence of police-hatred largely comes from the Black Lives Matter movement.
He claimed that the group stirs up “anarchy” as well as the “election,” which is consequently getting people hurt and killed. He later stated, “I guess my sensitivity to this is enhanced. I have a son who is a deputy sheriff, and I think about his life and little granddaughters.”
“The Dallas shooting is a very painful and despicable act attacking those who would serve and protect us,” said the Marion County representative.
Modeled after Louisiana’s Blue Lives Matter bill, Baxley’s proposed legislation is the first thing he says he will push for if elected state senator.
The Blue Lives Matter bill will extend the state’s hate crime law to protect first responders. “It’s clear that this was simply a matter of hatred,” said Baxley on the Dallas shooting. “I’m all for rooting out injustice where we find it.”
The Marion County representative will face Villager David Gee and state Rep. Marlene O’Toole in the Aug. 30 Republican primary.
