Wildwood officials hope to press the Florida Department of Transportation to fast-track a project to improve the city’s downtown area along U.S. 301.
The project will include improving pedestrian access, enhancing safety and addressing issues involving the CSX railroad tracks that run parallel to the highway on its west side, said Melanie Peavy, the city’s development services director.
She said an FDOT study of the project is planned for next year.
“It’s not a safe situation,” she said. “It’s not good for cars, it’s not good for pedestrians and it’s not safe for kids crossing.”
Mayor Ed Wolf said the project will help unite two sides of Wildwood separated by the highway and railroad tracks.
“This is crucial to us with what’s happening south of town and with the county,” he said. “Let’s see if we can get the state to bump this up for us.”
The project will be done under FDOT’s Complete Streets program, which also recently did a project in Leesburg.
