A check for $34,000 from Strut Your Mutt was presented to the Humane Society SPCA of Sumter County this week. The third annual Strut your Mutt event took place at the Polo Fields earlier this spring. Presented by Buffalo Ridge Animal Hospital and CBC National Bank and organized by Villager Debbie Smith, the event really increased this year in money earned; last year the event brought in $14,000.It is a fun day for pets and pet owners full of games, activities and contests.
Claudia Labbe, Fundraising / PR chairperson for the Humane Society said this money will allow the organization to maintain programs such as Kibbles and Big Fix.
“Kibbles is a program that provides pet food for low income neighborhoods,” said Labbe, “sometimes that is the difference in people being able to keep their pets.” Money will be used to help operate the shelter including everything from the phone and electric bill to food for the animals.
Last year’s event far exceeded Smith’s expectations.
“I am very appreciative of all the volunteers and also my presenting sponsors Buffalo Ridge and CBC, they really just let me run with it,” said Smith.
Smith has the happy problem of an event that has grown so large she needs to break up the responsibilities into committees and is looking for volunteers to assist in planning next year’s Strut.
