A Silver Springs man was arrested Tuesday after an altercation sparked by his playing of loud rap music.
Marion County sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence located on NE 21st Place in reference to an altercation, according to an arrest report. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with 29-year-old Justin Ryan Guthrie, who was standing out by the gate at the front of the residence, the report stated. Guthrie stated that he and the victim live together and got into a verbal altercation over Guthrie playing loud rap music. Guthrie stated that the victim got into his face, so Guthrie pushed him at which time the victim fell, got up and punched Guthrie in the eye. Guthrie stated that the altercation went outside onto the porch and was broken up when law enforcement was called.
Deputies then made contact with the victim, who stated that Guthrie has been playing rap music loudly inside and outside of the house for the last few days and has been asked to stop several times. The victim stated that Guthrie had been drinking earlier in the day and when he told Guthrie to turn the music off and quit drinking, an argument started. The victim stated Guthrie got in his face and “chest bumped him.” Guthrie then pushed him, causing the victim to fall over a chair in the house, cutting his arm on the edge of the chair. The victim stated they then went out onto the porch and Guthrie held the victim down and hit him a few times. He also stated that he hit Guthrie as well after he pushed him to defend himself.
Deputies spoke to Guthrie’s grandmother, who reported the altercation, and stated that Guthrie was mad because they told him to turn the rap music off. The grandmother stated that she witnessed Guthrie “chest bump” and push the victim first, and then witnessed the victim hit Guthrie.
Guthrie was placed under arrest on a charge of battery and was transported to Marion County Jail.
