A Purple Heart recipient fighting to save his driveway extension after he was turned in last year by a troll is facing another round in his year-long battle.
Kevin McCabe and his wife, Jean, and several of their neighbors were turned in more than a year ago for unauthorized driveway extensions at their homes in the Hallandale Villas. The residents in the patio villa community were victims of an anonymous complaint.
Other homeowners gave up the fight, but the McCabes have fought for and won a number of extensions as they continue to pursue a discrimination claim through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, based on Kevin McCabe’s disabilities, which are a result of his military service.
The McCabes will ask for another extension when they appear Friday before the Community Development District 8 Board of Supervisors. The CDD 8 Board meets at 11:30 a.m. at the District Office at Lake Sumter Landing.
McCabe served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967 and was seriously injured when he stepped on a land mine. He and other aging and physically challenged residents of the Hallandale Villas ran afoul of Community Standards after they extended their driveways without approval from the Architectural Review Committee. He had argued he needs the driveway extension because of his physical limitations.
