Wildwood man jailed after battered woman walks two miles to call 911

Norman Lee Williams

A 49-year-old Wildwood man found himself behind bars early Saturday morning after a bruised and battered woman claimed he took away her cell phone and car keys during a heated altercation.

A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy was called to a Wildwood residence at about 11:30 p.m. Friday and when he arrived, the woman claimed that Norman Lee Williams had hit her twice with a closed fist on her right eyebrow and behind her right ear.

The woman said she tried to get her phone from Williams and told him she was going to call 911 for help. She said he refused to return her phone and when he walked into another room to answer his cell phone, she fled from the residence, a Sumter County sheriff’s report states.

The woman told the deputy that she left because she was afraid of Williams. She said she went to a friend’s house about two miles away and was able to call 911. And she claimed that Williams threatened to burn her vehicle and has intentionally disabled it in the past, the report says.

Deputies escorted the woman back to her residence and she gave them permission to enter the house. They knocked on the door several times and when they didn’t get an answer, they entered the house and announced their presence loudly, which finally drew a response from Williams, the report says, adding that he claimed the woman “jumped on him and he had to get her off.”

While at the home, deputies noted that it appeared Williams had tampered with the woman’s vehicle because it wouldn’t start even though it had been driven recently and was in good working order prior the incident, the report says.

Williams was taken into custody and transported to the Sumter County Detention Center. A criminal background check showed that he had a prior guilty conviction on March 17, 2009 for aggravated battery, as well as an arrest on April 9 for battery.

Williams was charged with obstructing justice (depriving use of 911) and battery (second or subsequent offense). He was being held on $25,500 bond.
