‘Highly intoxicated’ man damages squad car during trip to jail

Orlando Diaz

A “highly intoxicated” man damaged a Lady Lake Police Department squad car during a trip to jail.

Orlando Diaz, 54, who lives with his girlfriend in The Quarters Apartments in Lady Lake, was arrested Thursday night after an altercation with his lady friend in the car wash area of the apartment complex. He was “highly intoxicated” when he was placed under arrest, according to an arrest report.

During a trip to the Lake County Jail, Diaz was able to maneuver his hands around to the front of his torso and began banging on the plexiglass inside the squad car. The police officer stopped the car and adjusted the handcuffs Diaz was wearing. Diaz was able to maneuver his hands around a second time and once again began beating on the plexiglass that separated him from the officer.

Diaz caused an estimated $500 damage to the patrol car.

The New York native was booked on charges of battery and criminal mischief. Bond was set at $2,000.
