The Sisterhood of Temple Shalom, an outreach committee, is sharing the Passover holiday with area retirement communities, assisted living facilities and memory care centers. Passover, which starts Monday, April 10, is an eight-day celebration of the emancipation of the Israelites from being enslaved in Egypt.
Led by Village of Hadley resident Sylvia Elinoff, Sisterhood members are participating in 10 Passover presentations. Special foods, traditional holiday songs and personal recollections are part of the program.
The Temple Shalom Sisterhood Community Outreach Program provides an educational holiday experience with a delicious ending and a wonderful opportunity for people of all faiths to learn about and appreciate each other’s culture.
The Sisterhood Community Outreach Committee started four years ago and has grown to include forty members. In addition to Passover, they take Sukkot and Hanukkah celebrations to the larger community. The Sisters have formed personal relationships with residents in the audience during their visits. As the bond grows many of the residents have shared their memories including two residents who talked about being holocaust survivors. The residents look forward to their visits and The Temple Shalom Sisters find it an uplifting fulfilling experience.
