Villagers who feared plea fell on deaf ears surprised to see flashing signs on their street

Villagers who feared their pleas for safety fell on deaf ears were surprised to see flashing signs pop up on their street.

Residents of the Village of Del Mar on Wednesday night spoke out before the Lady Lake Commission, describing their fears about walking on Del Mar Drive.

They said they are frequently buzzed by golf carts whose aggressive drivers believe walkers should stay off of the shared multi-modal lanes that run parallel to Del Mar Drive.

Commissioners balked at the residents’ request for a sidewalk on Del Mar Drive from Rio Grande Avenue to Avenida Central. The estimated cost is $94,000.

On Friday, two signs were put up by the Town of Lady Lake flashing the reminder that “Golf Carts Must Yield to Pedestrians.”

Residents and Allison Firth and Cathy Black, who spoke out at last week’s Lady Lake meeting, said they were encouraged to see the signs.
