Freezer-raiding bandit makes off with large haul of food from popular restaurant

The owner of Little Joey’s Italian Restaurant in Summerfield called a Marion County sheriff’s deputy for help Monday after discovering that a thief had broken into his restaurant.

The owner of the popular eatery, located at 16840 S. U.S. Hwy. 27/441, told the sheriff’s deputy that when his employees arrived for work Monday morning, they noticed the lock was missing from a freezer door and several items were stolen. He said that an unknown white man had broken the lock to the freezer door and unlawfully entered it, a sheriff’s office report states.

The owner said his staff completed an inventory of the missing items and calculated that $615 worth of food was taken. He those items included beef ($50), veal ($140), chicken breasts ($47), shrimp ($35), Mozzarella cheese ($27), spaghetti ($25), lasagna ($40), Mahi Mahi ($30), lobster ($60), salmon ($30), tilapia ($20), meatballs ($96) and cucumbers ($15), the report says.

The owner also said the lock to the freezer, valued at $17, was cut and taken. The sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation into the burglary and the case remains open.
