An 89-year-old Villager has been identified as the driver of a golf cart knocked over Tuesday after striking a rope pulled across Del Mar Drive by a tree removal company.
Mary Lou Lema, of the Village of Mira Mesa, was airlifted from the scene of the accident which occurred at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Del Mar Drive and Del Toro Drive.
Lema had been at the wheel of 2003 Yamaha golf cart traveling on Del Mar Drive when she struck the rope, according to an accident report from the Lady Lake Police Department.
When the golf cart hit the rope, it caused a jolt that knocked Lema to the ground and the golf cart landed on top of her. When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, she complained of head pain and her foot was bleeding.
The report identified 44-year-old Brad William Miller, of Leesburg, as the owner of Double Discount Tree and Landscape which was performing the work at the home at 1201 Del Toro Drive.
He told police that he had stopped traffic to run a rope from the tree to the back of his truck to pull down the tree as they cut it. While the rope was pulled across the roadway, he was allowing vehicles to drive under it. He claimed Lema “wasn’t paying attention.”
