With freedom comes responsibility

To the Editor:

The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and edited by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.
Our Second Continental congress voted for our country’s  independence July 2, 1776 and approve a draft of the declaration July 4, 1776. It clearly states; all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights that include Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
To secure these rights, our Constitutional Republic was formed, “deriving it’s just power from the consent of the governed”, and the Revolutionary War was fought and won.
Samuel Young, Jr. said: “Liberty is a constant battle between government; who would limit it, people; who would concede it, and patriots; who would defend it.” Liberty is a God given right and our freedom acts as protector that allows it.  We owe a great deal to our patriots, both living and dead.  In a letter to his wife, John Adams said; “Posterity! you will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make good use of it.”
We have much to celebrate and be grateful for on this day. Eleanor Roosevelt wrote; “Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person who does not want to carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect.” A thought that seems especially true today. May God continue to bless America. Thanks to our patriots who got us here. Happy Independence Day.
