Villagers encouraged to attend meeting on future of trash and recycling collection

Solid waste management in The Villages will be the topic of a meeting this week at Mulberry Grove Recreation Center.

The meeting will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Aug. 22. Villagers are encouraged to attend.

This second meeting follows a meeting in June in which an official with Jacobs, the trash hauler in The Villages, laid out a sobering assessment about the future of trash and recycling collection.

The pickup of trash and recyclables amounts to a $10 million business in The Villages.

A major disruption in the recycling stream occurred when China and other countries abruptly stopped accepting the vast majority of shiploads of American recycled products.

Amenity Authority Committee member Carl Bell cited environmental concerns when he called recently for the weekly Recreation News print product to be distributed online or via touch screens at recreation centers. Earlier this month, the Community Development District 2 Board of Supervisors announced a decision to weigh in on the future of Recreation News.
