Villager Harriet Dawson has signed up as a Guardian for Villages Honor Flight.

The newest group of Villages Honor Flight Guardians took their first step on what promises to be a long but rewarding journey.

The Guardians met this morning at Colony Cottage Recreation Center for the first of a series of meeting aimed at getting them ready to escort World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the nation’s war memorials.

Harriet Dawson of the Village of Hadley has signed up to be a first-time Guardian.

Her husband served in the Pacific in World War II.

“I have heard so many good things about Honor Flight,” she said. “I wanted to get involved and do my part.”

Villager Joe Hambright led the group of about 20 Guardians through all of the steps ahead of them.

Hambright is prepping for his ninth Honor Flight trip.

“Safety is our No. 1 priority,” Hambright said.

The Guardians and their veterans will meet March 16 in the first pre-flight meeting.

Hambright encouraged each of the Guardians to form a social relationship with their veteran prior to the trip.

“And get to know their significant other,” he added.

Their trip is slated for April 27.

He warned the Guardians that the day of the Honor Flight will be a long one.

“But there is a lot of emotional reward,” he added.
