89-year-old Villager arrested in bicycle hit-and-run crash

Marilyn Hamilton

An 89-year-old Villager has been arrested in a hit-and-run crash that injured two bicyclists in The Villages.

Marilyn Jean Hamilton has been arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol in the Oct. 30 hit-and-run crash that left 60-year-old Jessica Laube of the Village of Dunedin with a serious head injury. Her husband, 68-year-old Robert Hunter had been riding with her on Morse Boulevard and also was struck by Hamilton’s white Mercedes.

Hamilton reportedly got out of the car, saw the crumpled cyclists on the roadway, got back in the Mercedes and drove away, according to witnesses and the FHP. The Mercedes had damage to the front and windshield.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz, was located at a repair facility in Gainesville, according to FHP.

Hamilton, a resident of the Village of Fernandina, is facing two counts of leaving the scene of a crash with injury. She was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $10,000 bond.

She and her husband Robert “Lynn” Hamilton purchased their home on Twisted Oak Way in 2012. He died in 2016. They moved to The Villages from Midland, Mich.

FHP continues the search for a Jaguar that struck a Villager on a bicycle in a separate hit-and-run incident. Ken Nevers, 61, was hit shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday when he was bicycling near the Manatee Recreation Center. He suffered a broken rib, a separated shoulder, stitches to the forehead and lost a lot of skin. Anyone with information regarding that case is asked to contact the FHP by calling (813) 558-1800 or Crime Stoppers at **TIPS.
