Congressional candidate Daniel Webster spoke to the Villages Conservative Action Group Thursday evening at the Savannah Center in an effort to rally support and encourage members to vote.
Before beginning his speech, Webster gave a shout out to District 12 candidate David Gee by saying he was glad that Gee was “here looking to make government better.”
He then discussed his background starting with his American ancestry, which dates back to 1643, and briefed his early life before politics.
In the late seventies, Webster was heavily involved with his Baptist church in Pine Hills where he had a pivotal moment in life after local commissioners denied him zoning requests to build next to his church.
After the incident, the Pine Hills resident wanted to become involved in government and ran a door-to-door campaign in his community, which won him a seat in the state legislature after a dramatic tie in the 1980s race.
Since then, Webster has worked relentlessly in government from serving as Florida’s first Republican Speaker of the House in 122 years to serving in U.S. Congress in 2010.
The District 11 candidate shifted from reflecting on his political career to explaining how he has been working to change the system in Congress.
Focused on the idea of a “principle based, member-driven Congress,” Webster shared how he made that change during his terms in state legislature, and how it must happen in Congress so that every member “has a voice.”
“If we don’t change the process by which we produce laws,” said Webster, a power based congress will produce “flawed laws” rather than “principle laws.”
Towards the end of his speech, Webster pleaded listeners to vote in the upcoming election. Otherwise, the country will spiral down under the presidency of Hillary Clinton, who he explained would elect Justices who “will undo everything in the constitution.”
He especially affirmed his support for Donald Trump and explained that his efforts to make changes within government would facilitate easily under a Trump administration.
