Seniors vs. Crime warns new Villagers not to let guard down in ‘the bubble’

Many Villagers aren’t aware that Florida’s largest and most-active Seniors vs. Crime offices are located here in The Villages.

Too often, Villagers wind up contacting Seniors vs. Crime after they’ve been scammed or ripped over by an unscrupulous contractor.

In an attempt to reach out to newer Villagers, Seniors vs. Crime held an open house Wednesday at its location at Brownwood Paddock Square. The open house celebrated Seniors vs. Crime’s second anniversary in the space it shares with the Wildwood Police Department next door to the Barnstorm Theater.

Ed and Ellen Allen of the Village of Duval were among those attending the open house.

“We didn’t really know much about Seniors vs. Crime. That’s why we stopped by,” Ed Allen said.

They chatted with the local head of Seniors vs. Crime, Villager Steve Renico, a retired police chief from Michigan.

Renico likes to warn Villagers, particularly new ones, that they shouldn’t let their guard down once they move into “the bubble.”

He says that arming yourself with information is the best defense.

Seniors vs. Crime also has an office at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Annex at the intersection of Morse Boulevard and County Road 466. A Marion County branch is located at 8230 Southeast 165th Mulberry Lane here in The Villages.

Villagers are welcome to stop by any of the Seniors vs. Crime offices to pick up pamphlets with plenty of information. The offices also keep records on local landscapers and other contractors who have had complaints filed against them.

Seniors vs. Crime is an arm of the Florida Attorney General’s office and investigates and attempts to resolve cases involving fraud, scams and civil disputes. Here in The Villages, Seniors vs. Crime works closely with local law enforcement.

Among those attending Wednesday’s open house was Wildwood Police Chief E.W. Reeser.
