Man arrested at Belvedere Library found mentally unable to face trial in child porn case

John O’Reilly

A Villages resident twice arrested last year on child pornography charges has been found mentally unable to stand trial.

John Edward O’Reilly Jr., 35, had been taken into custody by Sumter County sheriff’s deputies in April 2017 at the Belvedere Library when he was found to have inappropriate graphic sexual images on his iPhone. O’Reilly, who has a developmental disability, had been making paper airplanes with children at the time law enforcement had been called to the library.

He was arrested again on May 20, 2017, this time at his mother’s home in the Village of LaBelle. A search warrant was obtained for O’Reilly’s iPhone, on which videos were discovered showing sadomasochistic abuse of a child and sexual bestiality involving a child, according to an arrest report.

In January, a judge ordered an intellectual disability competency assessment, according to Sumter County Court files. In May, it was determined that O’Reilly is mentally unable to stand trial.
