A Village of Sanibel man who had a smart-aleck response for a law enforcement officer who had asked if he had been drinking has been sentenced in a drunk driving case.
Walter Matthew Fanok, 69, had been at the wheel of a red Chevy Impala at 11:30 p.m. Aug. 19 when he was spotted driving erratically, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy made contact with Fanok not far from his home in the 800 block of Journey Lane. Fanok’s chin was on his chest and it took nearly 90 seconds for Fanok to acknowledge the deputy.
Fanok admitted he had been drinking, but when the deputy asked him how much he had to drink, he responded, “None of your business.”
He refused to participate in field sobriety exercises and would not provide a breath sample. A check revealed he had been convicted in 2013 on a charge of DUI in Marion County.
Earlier this month in Sumter County Court, Fanok entered a plea of no contest in the case. He will lose his driver’s license for six months, has been placed on probation for one year and has been ordered to perform 50 hours of community service.
