McClure “Gunny” Mathews of The Villages, Florida passed away at the age of 80 on July 8th, 2023 at his home after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Gunny was born November 26, 1942 in Sandusky, OH. He was the son of the late McClure G. Mathews and Mrs. Elizabeth M. Mathews.

Gunny proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for 30 years including two tours in Vietnam. He continued serving his local community in Fort Myers, FL with two Fire Departments for 22 years. Gunny finally retired with his wife Barbara in the Villages in 2020.

Gunny is survived by his wife Barbara, four children: Chris, Brian, Mark, Mike; two grandchildren: Leo, Micah; two nieces: Tami Schultz and Sherri Marshall

Gunny was a kind and helpful person and was loved by all who knew him. He enjoyed sharing stories with the guys at the VVA Breakfast on Parr Dr. He will be greatly missed.
