Amphetamines found in supplements

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration scientists tested 21 “all natural” supplements claiming to help weight loss, increase energy and stabilize mood, and found that nine of them contained manufactured amphetamines (Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, November 2013). Manufactured amphetamines are found nowhere in nature and therefore cannot be “natural”. It is incredible that federal regulators have not issued any warnings about this to consumers.

Most of the amphetamine-containing products listed one of their ingredients as Acacia rigidula, a bushy plant that grows in Texas and Mexico. The FDA reported that they could not find the substance in samples of the plant. Last month a report also showed that a methamphetamine-like compound was in a pre-workout supplement for athletes.
