Village of Sanibel woman shares award at Quilt Week in Daytona Beach

A Villages quilter had a strong showing at the American Quilter’s Society Quilt Week which is taking place through Saturday at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach.

Among the 35 quilts receiving awards and special recognition was one made by Villager Linda Hungerford and Lora Douglas of Hampton. Their 71-inch-by-71-inch quilt, “Ad Libbing,” placed third in the Large Quilt – Home Machine Quilted category, one of seven quilt categories.

To create “Ad Libbing,” Hungerford and Douglas each made 15-inch-by-15 inch improvisational quilt blocks, used while teaching a workshop to members of The Quilting Guild of The Villages. Douglas then pieced the blocks together to make the quilt top. Hungerford layered two battings, polyester and wool, and quilted it on her home sewing machine. To finish the quilt, Douglas added binding and a label.

Hungerford, who lives in The Village of Sanibel, is a member of the Big Cypress Chapter of The Quilting Guild of The Villages, and Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild. Douglas is a member of the Gainesville, and Central Florida Modern Quilt Guilds.

This year’s winners were from 17 different states and three countries.
