Firefighters extricate pickup driver after three-vehicle crash on I-75

The driver of a pickup truck had to be extricated from the vehicle after a three-vehicle crash Monday night on Interstate 75 in Sumter County.

The crash occurred at about 6 p.m. at Mile Marker 317 near Bushnell when a Volkswagen Beetle driven by 18-year-old Grace Lougheed of Temple Terrace struck a U-Haul driven by 28-year-old Kasey Mitchell of Ruskin. The U-Haul hit the guardrail and flipped over into the northbound lanes where it struck the pick-up truck head on, according to Battalion Chief Brian Tucker of Sumter County Fire & EMS.

Crews arrived to find a total of four patients, including the pickup truck driver, 36-year-old Jamie Baumgartner of Maryville, Tenn. who had to be freed from the vehicle by emergency personnel. She was declared a trauma alert and transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center.

Mitchell and a passenger in the U-Haul she had been driving, 34-year-old Joshua Medero of Tampa, were also transported to ORMC. A passenger in the pickup truck, 29-year-old Ashlee Fugate of Knoxville, Tenn. suffered minor injuries and was also transported to ORMC.

Lougheed escaped injury. She was ticketed on a charge of careless driving.
