Woman nabbed at Ocala motel with drug she claimed was ‘rock in her shoe’

Lakesha Atkins

A homeless woman was arrested at an Ocala motel Monday morning after Marion County sheriff’s deputies received a 911 text asking for help.

When deputies arrived at the Sun Days Motel, located at 3351 S Pine Ave., they made contact with several residents who said they didn’t send the text. But while canvassing the motel and going room to room, a deputy observed 29-year-old Lakesha Atkins go to room 11, where the door was partially open, and start talking to one of the residents, a sheriff’s office report states.

When deputies made contact with Atkins and asked if she had made the 911 call or needed assistance from law enforcement, she said she did not. But deputies noticed that she was concealing something in her left hand, and when asked about it, she’d only open her right hand, the report says.

Eventually, Atkins opened her left hand and showed deputies a clear rock-like substance, the report says, adding that Atkins stated it was a “rock in her shoe.”

The rock-like substance field tested positive for cocaine and Atkins told deputies she bought it at a hotel behind the Sun Days Motel. But she then changed her story and said she found it on the ground and picked it up thinking it was a “Molly” rock, the report says.

Atkins was transported to the Marion County Jail and charged with possession of a controlled substance without a prescription (cocaine). She was being held on $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in a Marion County courtroom on Oct. 2 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charge.
