A 64-year-old resident of The Villages was arrested after admitting to stealing, but said he did not know why he had done it.

Lawrence Allen Fleischman of the Cottages at Summerchase on Friday night went to Wal-Mart at Buffalo Ridge Plaza and concealed merchandise in Wal-Mart bags in a shopping cart, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He left the store with $122.37 worth of items he had not purchased.

“The defendant admitted to stealing, and stated he did not know why he decided to steal the items in question, as he had the money to pay for the items. He stated he knew what he did was wrong, but could not state the reasoning for his actions,” the arrest report said.

Fleischman was arrested on a charge of petit theft and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. He was released after posting $500 bond.
