New law on golf carts takes effect July 1

A new law kicks in July 1 which allows reclassification of street-legal, “low-speed vehicles” as golf carts, to reduce registration and insurance costs.
This bill allows the conversion of a low-speed vehicle to a golf cart by reducing the maximum speed to 20 mph.
Of course, this bill has attracted the attention of golf-cart driving Villagers.
One of the sponsors of the bill was state Sen. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla. Hays represents a large portion of The Villages.
A host of other new laws kick in July 1 as well. They were signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott earlier this year.
