Woman whose license suspended 20 years ago arrested after caught behind wheel

Mary Elizabeth Saye

A Wildwood woman was arrested when she was caught driving a vehicle despite the fact her license had been suspended two decades ago.

Mary Elizabeth Saye, 69, was behind the wheel of a red Toyota truck at 7:40 p.m. on Memorial Day when she was pulled over at State Road 44 and Morse Boulevard, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. A check revealed her license has been suspended for more than 20 years. Her record of violations includes a suspension in 1991 for a drunk driving conviction and a 2004 classification as a habitual offender.

When asked why she was driving, Saye told the deputy, “I have to.”

She was arrested on a felony charge of driving while license suspended and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. She was released after posting $5,000 bond.
