Anne Smith Maybury, née Wright, died Monday, May 25, 2020, in The Villages, Florida, with her husband, Calvin Maybury, by her side. She was 95.
Anne will be remembered for her quick wit, playful spirit, kindness, and compassion. She was born on April 14, 1925, in Leesburg, Virginia, to Joseph Austin Wright, a farm manager, and Frances Dinsmore Steadman, a seamstress. Anne grew up with three sisters: Mary Louise Atwell, Doris Josten, and Evelyn Smith. She attended Eastern Nazarene College and married her first husband, Dr. Timothy Lawrence Smith, a noted historian and an ordained elder of the Nazarene church, in 1944.
Together, she and Tim traveled the world, ministered, and enjoyed themselves, living at various times on Beacon Hill in Boston, Massachusetts, in Burke, Virginia, and in West Palm Beach, Florida, among other places. They spent many summers at their beloved home in West Harwich, on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, hosting family and guests and antiquing (Anne was a connoisseur of fine china, always on the quest for a unique pattern or piece). During their time in Wolverley Village, England, Anne enjoyed inviting friends and neighbors to their annual July 4th celebrations, and was a regular at the local pub.
After Tim’s passing in 1997, Anne reconnected with Paul Calvin Maybury, a friend from her days at Eastern Nazarene College. They married in 1999 and spent 21 years together exploring Florida, New England, and the world, and sharing laughter and memories with their many family members, friends, and the larger Eastern Nazarene College community.
Anne loved her poodles, entertaining, and playing tennis, and devoted much of her time and energy to her family, friends, and all who needed her. Raised Methodist, she was an active lifelong member of the Nazarene church.
She is survived by her husband, known as Cal, and by her children, Karen Anne Zee, Timothy Lawrence Smith, Jr. (Larry), and Susan Elizabeth Waterman. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Bradley Waterman, and by her grandchildren: Becky Collet and her husband Dennis; Jennifer Weisel Bailey and her husband Stewart; Kerry Waterman Epstein and her husband Michael; Lauren Waterman; Brendan Waterman and his wife Emily; Austin Smith; and Abigail Smith. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Jacqueline Collet, Jack Bailey, Teddy Bailey, Jacob Epstein, Chloe Epstein, and Leonila Kallaur.
A memorial service will be planned for a future date, as soon as it is safe to gather at the Leesburg Church of the Nazarene in Leesburg, Florida.
