Before The Villages brought northerners, golf carts and pickleball, Sumter County was a much different place.

Village of Sabal Chase residents David and Carol Zimmerman ventured out Saturday to investigate a bit of that history with a tour of the Baker House in Wildwood.

The home of Senator David Hume Baker has been decked out for the holidays.

“A place like this can take you back in time,” said David Zimmerman, a retired history teacher.

Villagers Sandy Mott and Jerry Peacock did their part to bring history alive by dressing in Civil War-era costumes and offering details of those days gone by.

Baker (1841-1917) served in the Civil War as a first lieutenant in the 12th  Kentucky Calvary (Union). After the war he moved to Florida and served in the Florida Senate. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

The tours will continue Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The home is located at 6106 County Road 44A in Wildwood.
