Emergency Management seeking amateur radio operators

Sumter County Emergency Management will host a volunteer recruitment meeting for its Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) on Thursday, Feb. 5. The meeting will be held from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Sumter County Emergency Operations Center (Sheriff’s Office), 1010 N. Main Street, Bushnell.

RACES is a team of dedicated amateur radio volunteers that provide Sumter County emergency communications during disasters and other community emergencies. Amateur radio volunteers were instrumental in helping governmental agencies with communications during the 2007 tornadoes and 2004 hurricanes.
Members have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of communication activities that include disaster response, simulated emergency tests, special events, and reporting severe weather events to the National Weather Service.
If you are interested in becoming an RACES volunteer, please plan to attend the meeting. You do not have to be licensed amateur radio operator to attend.
For more information on volunteering and the RACES program, contact Gene King, RACES Officer, at (352) 748-3645 or KI4LEH@gmail.com.
