Handcuffed Oxford man quickly recaptured after attempting to bolt from Sumter County Detention Center

Drew Papke

A handcuffed Oxford man was quickly recaptured Thursday morning after attempting to bolt from the Sumter County Detention Center in Bushnell.

Drew Papke, 29, had been taken into custody on a Sumter County warrant charging him with resisting law enforcement with violence, possession of cannabis under 20 grams and possession of paraphernalia.

While he was being led into the sally port entrance of the detention center a Sumter County Detention support specialist authorized the opening of the exterior sally port door before ensuring the area was secure. While the sally port door was open, Papke ran from the facility. A brief chase ensued and Papke was quickly taken back into custody and subsequently charged with escape. Papke was booked at the jail without further incident.

The support specialist has been suspended pending an investigation.

Papke is being held on $7,000 bond.
