Villages District commander in Marion County helps nab drunk driver on U.S. 301

The Villages District commander for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office helped nab a drunk driving suspect Wednesday night on U.S. 301.

Lt. Thomas Calhoun was driving on the highway when he spotted a Toyota pickup driving an estimated 70 miles per hour in a  55 mph zone. The vehicle also crossed the center line.

Another deputy arrived at the scene and began to question the driver, 43-year-old Federico Galarza Lagunas of Belleview. The deputy spotted an open can of Modelo beer in the truck’s center cup holder.

During field sobriety exercises, Lagunas urinated in his pants, according to the arrest report. He provided breath samples that registered .197 and .194 blood alcohol content.

He was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and booked at the Marion County Jail.
