Sumter residents to save $1 million annually in vehicle registration

Sumter County Tax Collector Randy Mask is praising he state’s reduction of Vehicle Registration Renewal Fees.

“I want to applaud Gov. Scott for honoring the Legislature’s commitment to the Citizens of Florida. The Governor has signed legislation that will save Florida motorists over $395 million dollars in Vehicle Renewal Fees, based on an average savings of $20.00 – $25.00 per registration,” he said.

“Seldom do we see government give up a tax once established on the people. This fee reduction appropriately keeps more money in the hands of retirees and hard working citizens and their families to help with monthly expenses. These savings will work their way into Florida’s economy while benefiting our citizens, a true win- win for the state and the people,” he added.

The projected savings for Sumter County citizens will be about $1 million annually.

“Our office was proactive when this bill was making its way through the Legislature,” Mask said. “In Sumter County we have recommended single year renewals while discouraging biennial renewals, online renewals will also only offer a one year renewal.”

This legislative change will take effect Sept. 1. The legislative changes made by this act do not create a right to a refund of any taxes, fees, or surcharges collected before Sept. 1, 2014 , for a biennial registration.
