Community Development District 7 supervisors are worried about the impact of new residents from Fruitland Park on Colony Boulevard.

Two thousand homes are being built in the new Villages of Fruitland Park and CDD 7 supervisors are nervous about the impact that traffic, particularly golf cart traffic, will have on Colony Boulevard.

“In another 10 to 15 months, those houses will be sold and if there is not another outlet or inlet, we’re going to have to address it,” said CDD 7 Supervisor Jerry Vicenti.

This year, a traffic light was installed for $251,000 on Colony Boulevard to help control traffic on the busy thoroughfare between Colony Cottage Recreation Center and Colony Plaza shopping center. That light had not been part of the original plans.

“We are the ones who fixed that problem and I am proud of that,” Vicenti said.

CDD 7 supervisors are concerned that all of the golf cart traffic will be funneled from the south side of County Road 466A to the north side of CR466A through the tunnel at Colony Boulevard.

There is no plan for an additional golf cart tunnel from Fruitland Park, said District Counsel Valerie Fuchs.

But she said the Developer, engineers and units of government who had to approve the plans, all did “their due diligence” in the planning process.

Vicenti said the new traffic light on Colony Boulevard is “working great,” but said he is worried about the future.

“It’s going to become our problem,” Vicenti warned.

CDD 7 supervisors agreed to write a letter to the Developer expressing their fears about the impact the traffic associated with the new surge of residents might have on their district.
