Villages Honor Flight is dedicated to transporting as many U.S. military Veterans as possible to see the war memorials in Washington D.C.
The current focus is World War II and Korean veterans and any war-service veteran with a terminal illness.
Honor Flight will be holding its fourth annual golf tournament on Oct. 1 Signs are used in the Walk of Honor that lines the entrance to the golf tournament. However, so many Villagers have started using the signs in their yards and windows on holidays such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veteran’s Day that they are being made available prior to the tournament. VHF volunteer Marguerite Desbrow is taking orders for the signs. You can reach her at 633-0882. Signs ordered before May 12 will be delivered before Memorial Day. The cost for the signs is $30.
Although the golf tournament is not until October, it is not too early to sign up. Every year this event sells out. One of the tournament organizers, Frank Moravcik, has been on an Honor Flight.
“It was the most humbling experience of my life. I get teary eyed just thinking about it,” he said. Once he returned he immediately became a volunteer with the organization.
“The tournament is really a lot of fun,” he said. The teams can be men only, mixed or all women.
“We encourage the all-girl teams. Sometimes at these tournaments I think the women kind of get left out. We want to make sure that doesn’t happen,” he said.
The exciting aspect of the tournament is that it will pay for a minimum of 30 veterans to travel to travel on Honor Flight. The tournament will be at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course at Del Webb Spruce Creek. If you would like to register for the tournament or get more information go to the VHF website: www.villageshonorflight.org.
