Flag étiquette

To the Editor:

It is wonderful and beautiful to see so many American flags being proudly displayed on our national holidays here in The Villages; especially on Memorial Day in honor of our fallen heroes. However, I have seen many Villagers desecrate the Flags while they are staking them along the streets and driveways. They carry several flags out by hand and then toss them on the ground while they stake one. The Flags should never touch the ground in such a fashion.
Simply put the Flags in a bucket and carry them from spot to spot in a nice safe upright container. It’s easy and respectful.
Also, always dispose of damaged, desecrated Flags properly. Do not throw them in the trash. Take them to any American Legion Post or the Flag Store on 441 near 466.
