Learn more about danger of lightning in presentation at Eisenhower Recreation Center

Lightning Safety Awareness Week is June 24-30 is a reminder that we are living in the Lightning Capital of the United States.

It is not unusual for our area to experience over 100 days a year with lightning. All thunderstorms produce potentially dangerous lightning. Last year a 12-year old boy was struck and seriously injured at the Villages Polo Fields. Fortunately, he recovered.

The National Weather Service lightning safety message is When Thunder Roars Go Indoors. Once inside a substantial building or your home you need to avoid electrical, plumbing, windows, and corded telephones during a lightning storm.

To learn more about personal lightning safety, protecting your appliances and electronics from a lightning-induced surges, and your home from a direct lightning strike you may wish to attend the Property Owners Association meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 26 at Eisenhower Regional Recreation Center. You do not need to be a member of the POA to attend.
