A 59-year-old Oakland Hills woman was arrested Monday night after allegedly slapping a woman who wouldn’t help out around the house.

Kathryn Sue Welch was arrested on a charge of battery as a result of the altercation which occurred shortly before 10 p.m., according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim had attempted to de-escalate the situation and went to her room and closed the door. Welch followed her and commanded her to open the locked door. Welch then forced the door open and ordered the woman to leave the house. Welch then struck her with an open hand on the right side of the face, according to the arrest report.

Welch said she was tired of the victim not helping around the house and wanted her gone from the residence.

Three independent witnesses verified the victim’s account.

As she was being taken into custody, Welch said, “I don’t understand why I’m being arrested, I barely hit her.”

She was arrested on a charge of battery and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center.
