A last-minute cancellation by The Villages is adding suspense to an upcoming pitch to be made to the Leesburg Planning Commission.
“The Villages representatives have requested to postpone their agenda items to the January 18, 2018 Planning Commission Meeting. Therefore, this Thursday’s Planning Commission meeting has been cancelled,” Dianne Pacewicz of the City of Leesburg announced Tuesday afternoon.
Villages officials had been expected to appear before the planning commission at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that The Villages was looking at paying $11.9 million for 1,938 acres of land, most of it at $7,000 per acre. The project will bring 4,500 homes to a new Villages section of Leesburg, along with commercial development and recreation opportunities including golf courses.
Thursday’s meeting was to have included a pair of public hearings. The Villages is seeking an amendment to Leesburg’s code of ordinances as well as zoning change for 2,631 acres near the Florida Turnpike, according to documents obtained from the Leesburg Planning Commission.
The Villages is also in the midst of a major expansion at the Villages of Southern Oaks in Wildwood.
