Spruce Creeker arrested after allegedly attempting to steal nearly $700 worth of clothing

Joanne Eichenberg

A resident of Spruce Creek South was arrested after allegedly attempting to steal nearly $700 worth of clothing.

Joanne Eichenberg, 55, is facing a felony charge of grand theft following her arrest Thursday afternoon at Bealls on U.S. Hwy. 441 in Lady Lake.

The Pennsylvania native entered the store at about 3:15 p.m., selected $689 worth of ladies clothing and went into a fitting room, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

When she came out of the fitting room, the store’s loss prevention officer noticed that her purse was much larger than when she entered the fitting room. He went into the fitting room and saw that she had not left the clothing in there.

She attempted to leave the store without paying for the merchandise.

When a deputy arrived on the scene, Eichenberg admitted she had attempted to steal the clothing.

She was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $2,000.
