Sheriff’s offices team up to recover golf cart stolen from Leesburg home

Deputies from two area sheriff’s offices worked together last week to recover a stolen golf cart.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy was asked to help his law enforcement colleagues from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office after recover the golf cart its owner spotted in for sale on Facebook and said she could verify it belonged to her. The woman said the cart originally had been taken from her home in the 100 block of Sterling Way in Leesburg, the report says.

The deputy responded to a home in the 8900 block of SE 88th Place in Ocala, where the golf cart was sitting in the front yard. It had been repainted red and black and the seats were customized in the same colors, with oval head rests, the report says, adding that the golf cart had the same “characteristics” of the stolen cart, which originally was painted green.

The deputy made contact with the homeowner, who said he had purchased the cart from some in the Altoona area off Facebook and was attempting to resell it because it was broken down, the report says.

Due to the golf cart being covered in mud and dust, deputies weren’t able to lift any latent fingerprints. He forwarded the information to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, which requested the cart be towed for safekeeping, the report says, adding that Carters Towing took possession of the vehicle a short time later.
