Oxford Oaks man arrested on DUI charge after taking pickup on cigarette run

Michael Wood

An Oxford Oaks man was arrested on a drunk driving charge after taking his pickup on a cigarette run.

Michael Shawn Wood, 49, of 3090 Cichielo Court, was driving a 2009 Chevy Silverado pickup in the wee hours of the morning on Tuesday when he was stopped for having an inoperable headlight on County Road 466, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Wood said he had gone out to get cigarettes and initially admitted he had one or two drinks, but later said it had been two or three drinks, the arrest report said.

He stumbled during field sobriety exercises and repeatedly asked the deputy for a “professional courtesy” and be allowed to “walk home,” the report said.

Wood refused to submit to a breath test.

A criminal history check turned up a 2005 DUI conviction in Lake County and a prior refusal to submit to a breath test in 2003, also in Lake County.

He was arrest on charges of driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a breath test. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $3,000 bond.
