The deadline for filing for a homestead exemption is March 1.
Homeowners who purchased a home in 2015 as their permanent residence and took occupancy of the home on or before Jan. 1, 2016, may be eligible for savings on their 2016 property tax bill by filing for homestead exemption.
To qualify for homestead exemption, your Florida home must be your permanent residence; not a second home, investment property or a vacation home.
Florida law offers an additional exemption for seniors 65 and over with homestead and an adjusted gross household income of less than $28,482. A separate application is required to be filed with the property appraiser by March 1.
Additional exemptions also exist for military veterans with service connected disabilities and members of the armed services actively deployed in certain operations.
