A group of Villagers is disappointed to see the Wildwood City Commission move ahead with plans for a low-density subdivision adjacent to their property.
Village of Belvedere resident Carolyn Speckman told the three Wildwood commissioners present at Monday’s meeting she is worried about the development planned for what is literally her backyard. The 100 acres behind her house have been annexed by the City of Wildwood.
Speckman said she is concerned about recent crime in The Villages and fearful the housing development could bring more criminal activity.
Mayor Ed Wolf said there are many steps in the process before the housing development can proceed.
“There will be more public hearings. That is the place where many of the developers have gone to a great extent to try to work with their neighbors,” the mayor said.
He also said the city has strict design standards to which any builder must adhere.
City officials indicated that the development will not be a mobile home park but don’t know at this stage exactly what will be built.
The mayor and Commissioners Robby Strickland and Julian Green voted in favor of the ordinance changing the zoning from agricultural to low density residential. Two commissioners, Pamala Harrison-Bivins and Don Clark missed Monday’s meeting due to illness.
After the vote, a group of Belvedere residents said they were disappointed by the commission’s decision.
