Leesburg motorcyclist killed in collision with 88-year-old woman driving wrong way

A 41-year-old Leesburg man was killed in a collision at 8:10 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Hwy. 27 and County Road 48.

The motorcyclist has been identified as Shawn Honaker.

According to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 1995 Buick was traveling westbound on Hawthorne Boulevard approaching U.S. Hwy. 27 and hit another vehicle. Then the Buick, driven by 88-year-old Gladys Steinfurth of Leesburg, traveled southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. Hwy. 28. The motorcyclist laid down attempting to avoid the Buick, according to the FHP report. However, the front of the Buick hit the motorcyclist.

Honaker was transported to Leesburg Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Steinfurth suffered minor injuries and also was taken to LRMC.

Honaker was wearing a helmet, according to the accident report.

The crash remains under investigation.
