Toxicology report leads to DUI charge after Villager involved in golf cart crash

Cheryl Leeds Davis

A Villager pleaded not guilty earlier this month to a charge of driving under the influence after a golf cart crash this past November.

Cheryl Leeds Davis, 70, of the Village of Fernandina, pleaded not guilty Jan. 17 in Sumter County Court. She had turned herself in on Jan. 2 after learning that a warrant had been issued for her arrest. She remains free on $1,000 bond.

The warrant was issued after a toxicology report showed that Davis has a blood alcohol level of .217 when she was involved in a golf cart crash at about 5:45 p.m. Nov. 8 in the area of Morse Boulevard and Hillsborough Trail. A witness had summoned law enforcement.

Davis told an investigator that her golf cart had jumped the curb, she had lost control and it fell on its left side, according to the arrest report. She admitted she had consumed two gin drinks at a country club.

“I could smell a strong odor of alcohol emanating from her,” the deputy wrote in the report.

In December, a toxicology report, indicating Davis’ blood alcohol level was well above the legal limit was received from Leesburg Regional Medical Center. It led to the issuance of a warrant.

The Texas native has retained attorney James E. Wade III to mount a defense. A hearing in the case is set for Feb. 21.
