Evolution Dance Company pumped up over German TV debut

The Evolution Dance Company is ready for German TV.

Part of this week’s Evolution Dance’s program at Savannah Center will be broadcast in on German television, said Frank Olive, of the local dance group.

Evolution Dancers get ready for their show, ‘In The Spotlight,’ which opens at the Savannah Center on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The show also will be performed Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.

Evolution’s “In The Spotlight” show will be presented at Savannah Center on Jan. 29, at 4 p.m. It also will be on stage Jan. 30 and 31 at 7 p.m. A public television station in Hamburg, Germany will show clips from the show sometime this spring, Olive said.

A TV crew from the station was here recently to film a dress rehearsal of the show, Olive said. He added that they will be shown sometime this spring during segments on Florida lifestyle.

The German crew came here after seeing a clip of the dance group on the Internet.

“After reviewing their clip we had to come see this in person,” Till Lehrman, of the TV station, told Olive. “We were not disappointed. What a talented group. This will be quite an addition to our Florida lifestyle creation.”

Evolution Dance has been holding the shows for nearly a decade and has raised more than $71,000 to help two veterans’ organizations and military personnel: Operation Helping Hand and Operation Shoebox.

“In the Spotlight” tells the story of a group of dancers and the pressures and stress they endure while auditioning for a show.

The show is choreographed by Helene Yelverton and features tap, ballet and jazz routines. Artistic director and ballerina Diane Vargas plays a major part of the program.

“Helene’s concept for this show has provided a wonderful opportunity for us to bring the audience into our world,” Vargas stated. “Our exceptional choreographers have crafted this production, and our talented dancers have worked harder than ever.”
