Sheriff’s deputy called to Calumet Grove Pool after mysterious fire extinguisher incident

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy was called to the Calumet Grove Pool on Sunday after a Villages Recreation Department employee discovered that a fire extinguisher had been discharged.

A Villages Recreation Department employee reported finding a discharged fire extinguisher in a storage shed at the Calumet Grove Pool late Sunday morning.

The employee said she didn’t know when the incident had taken place but said she discovered the discharged extinguisher sitting on the floor directly below the wall mount where it’s normally located. The woman said the majority of the fire retardant from the extinguisher was directly in line with its location but a “light coating” of the powder was found throughout the entire storage room.

The employee said that the door lock on the pool storage shed, located at 17100 SE 82nd Calumet Ave., didn’t have damage and the key worked fine in the lock. She also said that nothing in the room appeared to be damaged, including the discharged fire extinguisher, a sheriff’s office report states.

The deputy noted that the pin to the extinguisher was hanging to its side and the fire retardant dust covering the floor hadn’t been disturbed and didn’t show any signs of footprints. The deputy also asked if surveillance video footage was available but was told it was not, the report says.

The deputy provided the recreation department employee with a case number and asked her to call if she gets any additional information.
