The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office will be hard at work this month raising money for Special Olympics.
Sheriff’s deputies will take part in Tip-A-Cop, an event that raises funds for Sumter County Special Olympics. It will take place from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 at City Fire in Lake Sumter Landing.
The event features uniformed deputies as waiters and waitresses. Diners are given a separate envelope in which they can leave a donation for Special Olympics.
The sheriff’s office’s first Tip-A-Cop event of the year was held at City Fire in Brownwood in March and was a huge success, raising $3,400 for Special Olympics. Lake County Sheriff Peyton Grinnell even stopped by and offered his support for the cause.
Later this month, deputies also will participate in another event to benefit Special Olympics. The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run takes place on Wednesday, April 24, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at SECO in Sumterville. Participants should arrive between 7:45-8 a.m. for photos.
Participants in the Torch Run typically make a quick stop at the Sumter County Courthouse in Bushnell for additional photos. The event concludes at the at SCARC building, located at 218 W Dade Ave., in Bushnell.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness campaign for Special Olympics. Deputies and officers from throughout the country carry the Flame of Hope to honor Special Olympians from their area and those from throughout the world. And each year, more than 5,000 law enforcement officers carry the torch on a 1,500-mile relay through Florida’s 67 counties.
