Villager arrested after allegedly driving drunk in golf cart in Fernandina

Steven Nicholas King

A Village of Hillsborough man was arrested after allegedly driving drunk in a golf cart.

Steven Nicholas King, 67, on Thursday drove a red 2015 Yamaha golf cart “at a high rate of speed” to a home on Jaffia Court in the Village of Fernandina, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He stumbled as he stepped out of the golf cart. He began walking “aggressively” toward the front door.

A deputy called out to King, who had bloodshot eyes and had the odor of alcohol on his breath.

“I want to talk to my friend who refused to mow my lawn,” King told the deputy.

King was asked how much alcohol he consumed. He said he had three beers. He also said he had taken medication.

The deputy noted that King’s nose was swollen and had dried blood on it. The deputy asked King how the injury had occurred.

“I did it to myself,” he said.

King swore at the deputy after being asked to perform field sobriety exercises.

The deputy attempted to handcuff King and put him into a patrol car, but King resisted.

“You’re going to have to force me,” King said.

King continued to tell the deputy, “I’m not drunk, I’m mad.”

He was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center, where he provided breath samples that registered .150 and .147 blood alcohol content. He also provided a urine sample after initially refusing.

He was booked on charges of driving under the influence and resisting arrest.

He was released after posting $3,000 bond.
